It’s a challenge – and it’s fun. Where else can you get rich training, learning that lasts, and have fun along the way? The LGMA Management Challenge has to be one of the best value training options available to local government. It encourages team building across your organisation, bringing together people who wouldn’t normally have a strong working relationship. Team members start to understand what other people in the organisation are doing and the different ways that people operate.

How the Management Challenge works

Councils nominate teams of five or six staff members.

Each team receives a detailed mentor’s kit.

Teams spend a few hours in the weeks preceding the Challenge to develop team skills, get to know each other’s strengths and plan their strategies. The professional development has already begun at this point as they engage with the team development process provided in the mentor’s kit and complete a pre-Challenge task.

A Challenge Day is held in each state in March where teams apply their skills to tasks that are typical of management in the local government environment. The tasks are crafted to develop and test individual and team competencies in predetermined management areas.

Detailed and targeted reports from professional facilitators provide the basis for workplace debriefing and application of learning outcomes to the workplace. The team receives a personal debrief from the facilitator.

The best performing team in each state and New Zealand contest the Australasian final.

Darwin will be the venue in May 2009.

Good news for small and country councils

Small councils can participate in the LGMA Management Challenge, too. If you think you don’t have enough staff to support a team, simply team up with another council. It’s an excellent way to build bridges across organisations. Country councils can team with others in their region or partner with a metropolitan council.

As a bonus there’s a $500 discount offered by LGMA WA for any composite team that includes a country council.
